Today's dinner: Tonkatsu (Pork cutlets), Korean-style bean sprout salad, Stir-fried goya and onion. 

Tonkatsu was super tender and yummy. We decided not to eat out any more to save money. I will make my home dishes more fun, cooking meat sometimes although we are usually vegetarians.

今日の夕食：とんかつ、もやしのナムル、ゴーヤちゃんぷる

とんかつめちゃやわらかくて美味しかった。節約のため外食はめったなことではしないと二人で誓ったので、これからは（普段はなんちゃってベジタリアンなんだけどたまに肉も食べて）家庭料理を楽しくしようと思う。

It was sunny, so we went on a picnic by Lake Washington yesterday.
On the way to Madrona beach, we found strange trees I have never seen in my life. 

最近お天気の日が増えてきた。晴れた土曜日に歩いて３０分のワシントン湖のほとりのビーチにピクニックに行った。道中見たこともない木に遭遇。

We can see Mt. Rainer when the weather is fine. It floats in the blue sky, which looks like Mt. Fuji.

晴れてたら、レニエ山も見える。マウントレニアって日本にコーヒー牛乳のシリーズがあるよね、あれってシアトルの山のことだったんですねー。知らんかったー。富士山のように空に浮かんでおります。

It called it "a beach," but it is actually a park. But you can swim in the lake. There are jumping boards, kids were having hun. Adults don't swim. They just sun bathe in the sun. We had some snack on the grass, watching unleashed puppies plaing around and people swimming.

ビーチと呼びましたが、実際は公園です。でも湖で泳げます。飛び込み台とかもあって子供が泳いでおりました。大人は水着を着ていても日焼けするのが目的のようで泳いでおりません。芝生の上でお菓子を食べながら、犬が駆け回るのやみんなが泳いでるのを見て、安上がりのピクニックといたしました。

I made 2 friends!

I made 2 friends. I know the number is only 1 digit and still far to 2 digits, but this is a great progress!! One is my brother's friend and the other is a student in the language school my husband works for. Both of them are really kind, and kind enough to give me lots of info about this city, and introduce their friends to me. Here I strongly need Japanese people and the sun!!

２人友達ができた！２ケタには程遠いけどいいんです。これからです。一人は兄のお友達、もう一人はクレイグが働く学校の生徒。二人ともめちゃ親切でシアトルの街についていろいろ教えてくれて、さらには彼女たちのお友達も紹介してくれるって……（泣ける）

Everyday is like this cloudy weather!

毎日こんな天気っすよ！
奥さんどう思います！？ 

When it geｔs sunny, it is like heaven.　No humidity, not so hot. Just comfy. As far as I remember, we had ONLY 3-4 sunny days after the second week of July.

先週末は晴れた。晴れたら素晴らしい。でもこんな天気シアトルに来てから３－４日しか経験してない。超レア奇跡の晴れの日。

Setback

I applied for a part-time job at Macy's, a famous, long-established department store.
I thought it would be a good idea to start a sales job while I am adjusting.

However, I failed. They didn't want to hire me.I don't know the reasons. This is a setback...but someday I am sure I will get a job if I keep trying.

メイシーズという老舗デパートのパートに応募した。販売の仕事をちょっとずつやりながら慣れていくのがいいかなと思ったんだけど…落ちた。理由は分からない。挫折。でも負けないっ。

It's a bit late but yay, Japan won!
I was cheering really "away" among those for our opponent.
ちょっと遅れましたが、日本勝ったね。めちゃアウェイな状態で応援しておりました。

I was touched for the first time by sports.Team Japan was obviously physically inferior to America's. It is convincing that we have kept losing to America until then. However, they could win at the World Cup.They could make it since they didn't give up.
明らかにフィジカル面では明らかに不利。アメリカに負け続けてきたというのも納得できる。でもワールドカップという大舞台で勝っちゃった。あきらめなかったからだね。

As a woman, as a Japanese and as an immigrant into a foreign country dealing with foreigners as them, I learned something, watching this game. Sports means challenging yourself. It gives you an oppotunity to bring yourself to a further point beyond the limit.
彼女たちと同じ女として、日本人として、外国人と渡り合う移民として勉強になった。スポーツというものは限界を自分自身で超えていくという、自分に挑戦していく行為なのだなと。私も頑張ろうっと。

New Desk and Book Shelf

We bought a new piece of furniture again at IKEA and built it...
新しい家具をまたIKEAで買って組み立てた。

The chair was $60(+tax).
The shelf and the desk were $120(+tax). 

悪くないべ？いすが60ドル（6,000円）で、つくえと棚のセットが120ドル（12,000円）。

ラベンダーと楓。北米ならではの取り合わせとでも申しましょうか・・・。

Settled in Seattle

I couldn't update my blog since we have been soooo busy at making our apartment homy. I am alive. Moving is almost done. What we need to buy is a desk and chairs.
金曜日にシアトルに到着していたのだけれど、忙しいのとインターネット回線がつながっていなかったので更新できなかった。無事生きています。やっと家らしくなってきた。あと机といすを買えば必要な家具は揃う。

Rents in Seattle are called "not bad" compared with other big cities, but they are still expensive in my perspective. In Tak, rents for 1BR apts should be around $600, but here, the average rate for 1 BR seems to be around $1,000!  If you want to find an apartment whose rent is less than $800, it will be a studio in 400-500sqft on the first floor or on the semi-basement and they are still around $700-750. 
シアトルの家賃は他の都市に比べてましなんだそう。でも私の高松レートでは高い！高松は１DKだと6万円くらい？でもここの平均は10万円。（大阪とか東京はこれくらいなんだろうか）もしここで8万円以下のアパートを探そうとしたら、1階かセミベースメントのワンルームになる。そしてそんなところでも7万円-7.5万円くらいはする。

We are lucky to have found this apartment during our short visit half month ago. It is really spacious(750sqft), sunny, quiet, very convenient and clean. The rent is $800. The manager is a good guy. We are very content.
アパート探しに関しては、日ごろの行いのわりにラッキーだったと思う。正味2日しか探せなかった（一日目は歩き回って部屋を見る予約、二日目に見に行くという段取り）にしては、そして3つしか見れなかったのに、広い（42畳！）、日当たり良好、静か、便利、きれいというすてきなアパートを契約できた。(クレイグの職場までは徒歩25分だけど・・・)管理人の男の子もいい人。住処に関してはほんとに満足。

From the East to the West - Day 4

Day 4 - Wyoming and Montana

Montana was beautiful. Looking at these beautiful mountains and rivers all day long turns my thoughts inward, so I recalled a lots of things which occurred to me in the near past. I realized I have been stressed out and a pain in the ass. I need to chill out.

モンタナは美しかった。きれいな景色をずっと見ていると、外界の刺激がないためか、思考が内側に向かう。なんだかいろいろ思い出して独りよがりだった私を反省した。迷惑かけた皆さんごめんなさい。

We stayed in Missoula, Montana. This is a really beautiful town. People are friendly and relaxing, enjoying beautiful nature. They seem liberal. Water is clear(tap water is icy cold!). Food was really tasty.

ミズーラという街に泊まった。本当にきれいな街で、人がフレンドリーでゆったりしてる。街が自由な空気にあふれている。水もきれいで、水道水でさえ山の水かと思うほど冷たい。ごはんもおいしかった。

We may want to live in this town someday in the future.  looks better than Vancouver.

In Boulder, it is sunny and dry all through the year. It showered a little when we were driving there. Some cars pulled over at the side of the road since they are not used to driving in the rain.

ちなみにコロラドは高地で太陽がさんさんと降り注ぐので雨がほとんど降らず乾燥している。だから雨が降ると車を運転するのが怖くなるらしく、ちょっと通り雨が降ったときに車が沿道で止まって雨が止むのを待っていた。ところ変わればいろいろ習慣が違いまふね。

We spent a half day in Boulder, Colorado, which has The University of Colorado, which Craig graduated from.
He told me how his college life had been. It seems to have been the turning point in his life, which helped him build his self-esteem and identity. Not only him, but also generally speaking, which university they are from seems to mean a lot to them. This　trip was like his homecoming oppotunity.

半日コロラド州ボールダーで休憩。クレイグの人生のターニングポイントとなったコロラド大学があるところ。誇らしげにそして嬉しそうに大学を案内してくれた。一般的に、アメリカ人にとって卒業大学は心のよりどころのようで、思い入れが強いみたい。 

There are creeks running in the city. It is an amazing volume of water. Very clear and a good water sound. We walked along a creek and went to Colorado University to buy a CU T-shirt. 

街にはきれいな小川がざぶざぶ流れていた。小川に沿った散歩道を歩いて大学へTシャツを買いに行った。 

The school mascot is a buffalo. This is a well made real-size stuffed animal. 

学校のマスコット、ばっふぁろー。実物大。かなりリアルにできてる。

This tea house is from Tajikistan. When the city Boulder became a sister city to a city in Tajik, they gave this building as a token of friendship. Boulder built an Internet cafe in a Tajik city......20 years after they gave this gorgeous tea house.

めちゃ本格的なイスラム建築のカフェがある。タジキスタンのどこかの都市と姉妹都市提携を結んだときに組み立てて再現できるように友情の証としてまるごとプレゼントしてくれたんだそうだ。でも貧乏なはずのタジキスタンの姉妹都市がそこまでしてくれたのに、お金持ちのボールダー市がお返しにインターネットカフェをつくってあげたのは20年後だったんだとさ。極悪都市っ。
いまはおしゃれなカフェとして賑わっておりまふ。下の写真はそこで食べたもの。

From the East to the West - Day 1

ずーっとこんなかんじ

The 1st day of our trip to go across the USA. 
We went through Pennsylvania and Ohio from New Jersey. We are now in Indiana.

北米横断一日目。今日はニュージャージー州からペンシルバニア、オハイオ、そしてインディアナと来た。

At a rest area, we came across a tent of a Christian Motorcyclist Association. They were offering free drinks and snacks for holiday drivers. They said, "We are glad if people have a more delightful trip with these treats." How nice they are.

サービスエリアで「バイクを愛するキリスト教徒の会」（そんなんあるんや）の人がボランティアでお茶とお菓子を振舞っていた。近くの谷に住んでいるんだそうだ。「ドライバーの人がちょっとでも楽しい旅が出来たらそれが私たちの幸せ」と言っていた。キリスト教徒というとアラブ社会を許容しないとか人種差別する側とか私にはよくないイメージがあるがそれは一部であることを思い出した。純粋に親切心のあふれるキリスト教徒の人もいる。これが多様性のアメリカ。忘れないでおこうと思った。
 

We had dinner at Cracker Barrel by our hotel. We ordered fried fish with such sides as fried okra, corn meal balls, pinto beans, and collared greens. These sides sound healthy at first, but actually, the fried okra is chopped and fried, so we can tastes just its skin. Corn meal balls are just carb-balls. Pinto beans and spinach were stewed with bacon.
We ordered salad as well, but it was covered with shredded cheese, bacon bits, and lots of big croutons. One of my husbands friends later joked the dish called "salad" in America is actually "a bacon cheese burger." I even felt like eating grass on the way to our hotel.
アメリカの南部の料理を出すチェーンのレストランに行った。できるだけヘルシーにしようと、揚げ物だけど魚を頼んで、サイドディッシュも最大限ヘルシーに、オクラフライ、コーンミールボール、 金時豆、青菜の煮たやつを頼んでみた。でもお皿にのってきたのは、１ｃｍに切り刻まれたほぼ衣の味しかしないオクラ、ただの炭水化物の団子のコーンミールボール（の揚げたやつ）、金時豆も青菜もご丁寧にベーコンと一緒に煮込まれて・・・見事にすべて茶色のお料理だった。

サラダを頼んだけれど、それも容赦なくチーズとベーコンと大きなフランスパンのクルトンが乗っかっていて、クレイグの友人いわく、アメリカ内陸のサラダとは要は「チーズベーコンバーガー」なんだそうだ。今日一日新鮮な野菜を思い切り食べていないうえ、頼んだサラダも「チーズベーコンバーガー」だったので生野菜が恋しくて帰り道の芝生がおいしそうに見えた。

American Summer Festival

American Summer Festivals are large in scale. They seem like a temporary amusument park. This is one sponsered by the Fire Department in a town called Atlantic Highlands. Everything has a reminisence of the 1970s - 80s in color and presentation like those in Japan. Probably they don't change because they are supposed to remind people of the old memories of their childhood.

アメリカのお祭りは一日遊園地を意味する。これはアトランティックハイランドという小さな街の消防署主催のお祭り、にしては規模が大きい。でもテイストはすべてが70-80年代のポップさにあふれている。日本のお祭りもそうだけど、お祭りだけは時代に合わせてモダンになったりしない。お祭りとは大人も子供のときの思い出に浸ってなつかしさを感じるところ、変わってはいけないところなのかな。こんなこと考えたこともなかったけれど。

Drinking alchohol in public is prohibited even at festivals. Adults who want to drink have to go into a cage, I mean space blocked by fences, to stay apart from kids. 

お酒を飲む大人用に仕切られたスペース。
お酒を公共の場で飲むことはアメリカでは禁じられているのでこういう措置をとるらしい。徹底してまふね。

The festival is held at the harbor. There are fishing tours. Fluke caught here are big, like over 50-60cm. Small fluke like those we eat in Japan must be released under the law. 

お祭りはハーバーサイドであった。これらの船はカレイとかの魚のツアーボートということ。日本人が食べる大きさのカレイは釣っても逃がさないといけない。50-60センチ以上のカレイは捕って食べてもいいんだってさ。一回行ってみたい。

We are leaving tomorrow.  We decided to take Buffalo with Panda and Puppy. Buffalo seems to be tickled by Panda and Puppy. Maybe it is initiation to welcome Buffalo as their buddy.

シアトルには明日出発。バッファローも連れて行くことにした。三匹置いたら、バッファローがパンダと土佐犬にくすぐられていた。新しい友へのイニシエーションの儀式。
